Friends School Mullica Hill kids of all ages have been loving the Maker Challenges that have been popping up all around campus. Three MakerSpaces have been set up in the Hanshi building for the older kids and another in the Noel Baker for kindergarten and prekindergarten students. The challenges include things like building one of the architectural wonders of the world out of wooden pieces or creating a model of a bird with Legos.
“MakerSpaces are cross-curricular and encourage playfulness, inspire wonder and celebrate unique solutions,” said Teacher Diane. “We are switching out the materials weekly to stimulate new thinking.”,
Students have been loving trying out the challenges between classes and during free time. Some teachers have even allowed students who finish a test early to go visit a station and just tinker.
PreK1 student Peyton B. loves the new MakerSpaces. “It is fun and I love to try it out,” she said.
The challenges will continue through the month of February. If you’re interested in more info on MakerSpaces, Teacher Diane recommends reading The Philosophy of Educational Makerspaces.
