Protractors, rulers and compasses have gone high tech with the introduction of a new app. GeoGebra is a sophisticated mathematics app available on the students’ iPads that has been proving an especially helpful tool in Teacher Dave’s geometry classes. “GeoGebra allows the student to extend their thinking even after they’ve completed a construction through manipulating and changing the shapes,” said Teacher Dave. “They get to think about ‘what happens, if I change this’ without completing the construction all over again.”
Being able to fiddle with variables and instantly see visual results is appealing to Teacher Dave’s students. “They have enjoyed making geometric constructions through paper and pencil but when constructing in GeoGebra, they truly begin to comprehend the concept.”
Working on the fundamentals with pencil-and-paper is still a large part of the curriculum, but new technology is always being explored by our teachers to create a more robust and challenging learning environment that remains relevant to our students. “Students are really having fun with it and for visual learners it has been incredibly useful in making mathematics more accessible,” said Teacher Dave.
