The great drama of the summer of 1970 discussed in the last post left the Board, the staff, and parent volunteers exhausted but also exultant as they opened School that Fall. On September 13th, Friends School Mullica Hill opened its first year as a truly independent school. There were 289 enrolled students from 3-year old children to 12th graders. Tuition ranged from $475 in Pre-Kindergarten to $900 in high school. The Board set the maximum class size at 22 students per class. The School relied greatly upon volunteers, and teachers earned salaries below that of the public schools, received no benefits, and were not paid additionally for extra-curricular work. Still, there was an optimistic spirit given all that had been accomplished in such a short time and great hope that the School would mature and grow quickly.
This historical entry is part of a series chronicling the history of Friends School Mullica Hill on the occasion of the School’s 50th anniversary. The entries begin with the first arrival of Quakers in the region and continue all the way to the present under the leadership of the School’s ninth Head, Matt Bradley.
