The search for a new Head of School to replace Beth Reaves began with some fortunate news. Matt Bradley, who had served on the Board at the request of Drew Smith in 2005, was returning to the region after having left to take a Head of School position in New York. Hired quickly as an Interim Head of School, he was named the ninth Head of School after a more extensive search process six months later. Familiar with the School from his stint on the Board, he made a smooth transition. He oversaw a strategic planning process that led to the revision of the School’s mission and a clear vision for the future of the School. The new mission statement read: “Friends School Mullica Hill empowers students to achieve their full potential and become responsible global citizens by providing a comprehensive academic program infused with Quaker values in a diverse and inclusive learning community.” Another important moment was his decision to separate Development and Admissions, which had been combined into one staff person, Judy Corona-Karpowicz. Judy did a truly amazing job juggling both positions, but separating the two positions allowed for a greater focus on gaining new students. With Judy focused on Development work, Matt hired Erica Salmon to return as Admissions Director. Erica had held several positions at the School, most recently as an English teacher, but she had left the School to work at Wilmington Friends School. With a new Head in place and Erica’s great energy, the School began to consistently expand its enrollment for the first time in many years, adding nearly 40 students during 2019 and 2020.
