Part of reestablishing the Costa Rica trip was fundraising so that all 8th graders, regardless of their financial situation, could afford to go on the trip. Beth included the trip into a wide array of campus improvements that need donor support and called the program, “Building Greatness.” This was the first major gift campaign for campus construction since the building of the Hanshi Deshbandhu Building and included the creation of an outdoor learning space, renovation of the Big Exciting Space and several other improvements. The campaign was successful due to the generous support of many donors, but the key contributions arrived due to Trustee Bill Schmidt. When the philanthropic Elliott Foundation wanted to donate to a school or university in honor of Bill, he graciously named Friends School Mullica Hill as his preferred recipient. The Foundation’s generous support ended up being about half of all funds given to the campaign and assured its success.
