Another key initiative during this period was a complex initiative to replace the deteriorating roof on the Noel-Baker Building, while also adding solar panels to provide the school with cheaper electricity and doing right by the planet. Several donors from across the Delaware Valley were needed to pull this project together, but Bruce Haines pulled everything off. One of the key moments in the campaign was the donation of funds for the new roof provided by Dorothy Kramme, the one-time gym teacher and longtime Board member. The other key moment was the decision by Chiyo Moriuchi, a Quaker and friend of the Haines family, to take the lead in putting together the investors in the solar project. Despite myriad difficulties along the way, the School got its solar panels, saved some money, and now “leads by example” in the struggle for clean energy.
