Issues of diversity and empathy had long been important to the School, and the struggle to maintain the warm and welcoming environment was one being constantly renewed. Bruce Haines decided to form a special School committee focused on this issue, and he asked Emily Blanck, a parent and a Quaker with a special interest in this matter, to clerk a new School committee that would include both staff and parents. Together, they decided to create a “One Book, One School” program that focused on different cultural traditions each year. Over the next several years, the Network organized impressive programs highlighting cultures from all over the world from Italy to Japan to Pakistan and beyond.
