After a long search for a new Head of School, the Board chose English-born Quaker, Alex Horsley. This was the beginning of a truly new era for the School. Many of the founders had departed in one fashion or another, and the School’s enrollment had been declining steadily. The new Head of School had to find a way to increase enrollment and turn things around. In a message at the end of his first year, Horsely wrote that “coming to Mullica Hill has been a most exciting and rewarding challenge” and that he was greatly encouraged by the “tremendous levels of support that I have obtained from all sections of the student body.” In addition to the great support given to him by students, parents, and teachers, Horsley was also aided by a new clerk of the Board, Dorothy Kramme, whose vision, energy, and dedication to the School would endure for the next three and a half decades.
