In the last post, we discussed the rebirth of Woodbury Friends School and its growth in the 1950s. As the School grew, space became an issue. By 1966, the School had, in spite of the space issues, added seventh and eighth grades. Many wanted to add high school grades as well. This desire to expand led some of the teachers and overseers to form a new Friends School Corporation with a goal of finding a second campus location. After exploring numerous options, they settled on Mullica Hill, where they could purchase the old Union Academy School Building, then owned by the Odd Fellows. Renamed the Cope Building after longtime Trustee Caleb Cope, this was a key moment in the birth of what would become Friends School Mullica Hill.
This historical entry is part of a series chronicling the history of Friends School Mullica Hill on the occasion of the School’s 50th anniversary. The entries begin with the first arrival of Quakers in the region and continue all the way to the present under the leadership of the School’s ninth Head, Matt Bradley.
